📅 When & Where to Plant

Timing is Everything:
  • Start Indoors: Begin 4-5 weeks before the last frost date. This gives them a head start for earlier blooms.
  • Transplant Outdoors: Wait until all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed to 65-70°F (18-21°C). Dahlias are tropical plants and hate the cold!
Location, Location, Location:
  • Sun: Choose a spot with Full Sun. The more sun, the more blooms!
  • Soil: They need well-draining soil. If your soil is heavy clay, consider planting them in raised beds or large containers.

🪜 How to Plant (Critical Step!)

Light is Essential for Germination!(Note: Many Dahlia seeds benefit from light to germinate, though some varieties may need a light covering. For best results with this mix, follow these steps)
  1. Prepare: Use a seed starting tray with moist, sterile potting mix. Do not use soil with fertilizer, as this can burn the delicate seedlings.
  2. Sow: Place the seeds on the surface of the soil.
  3. Press: Gently press the seeds into the soil to ensure good contact.
  4. Cover (Optional): For this mix, a light dusting (1/16 inch) of soil is recommended to keep them moist, but do not bury them deeply.
  5. Water: Mist lightly to avoid washing the seeds away. Keep the soil consistently moist.
  6. Transplant: Once seedlings have 2-4 true leaves and the weather is warm, harden them off and transplant outdoors, spacing them 12-18 inches apart.

🧑‍🌾 Care & Maintenance

  • Fertilizing: Dahlias are heavy feeders but need the right balance.
    • Rule of Thumb: Use a high-phosphorus fertilizer (the middle number on the package) every 3-4 weeks.
    • Warning: Too much nitrogen will result in huge green leaves but no flowers!
  • Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry spells.
  • Deadheading: Remove spent blooms to encourage the plant to produce more flowers.

❄️ Overwintering (Saving Tubers)

Dahlias are tender perennials. In zones 8 and above, they may survive the winter in the ground with mulch. In colder zones (7 and below), you can save the tubers (bulbs) for next year:
  1. Dig: After the first hard frost kills the foliage, cut the stems back to 2 inches and carefully dig up the tubers.
  2. Dry: Brush off excess soil and let them dry in a well-ventilated area for 1-3 days.
  3. Store: Place them in a box with peat moss or vermiculite. Store in a cool (40-50°F), dry, and dark place until spring.

💡 Expert Tip

For a showstopping display, plant the taller varieties (3-6ft) at the back of your border and the shorter ones (1-2ft) in the front or in containers on your patio. Pair them with Zinnias for a non-stop color explosion!
