- Colors: Vibrant Mix (Reds, Pinks, Yellows, Whites)
- Sunlight: Full Sun (Requires at least 6 hours of direct sun)
- Soil: Poor to Average, Well-drained (They hate wet feet!)
- Latin Name: Portulaca grandiflora
1. When to Plant
- Direct Sow: Wait until after the last frost date when the soil is warm (70-80°F).
- Start Indoors: Begin 6-8 weeks before the last frost for earlier blooms.
2. How to Plant (Critical Step!)Light is required for germination!
- Sow: Scatter the tiny seeds on the surface of the soil.
- Press: Gently press them into the soil to ensure good contact.
- Do NOT Cover: Leave the seeds exposed to light. Covering them will prevent germination.
- Water: Keep the soil slightly moist (but not soggy) until germination (7-14 days).
3. Transplanting
- Once seedlings are large enough to handle, thin or transplant them 12-15 inches apart to allow for their spreading growth habit.
- Watering: Once established, water sparingly. These are succulents—overwatering is the #1 cause of death. Let the soil dry out between waterings.
- Fertilizing: They don't need much fertilizer. In fact, too much nitrogen will result in lots of green leaves and few flowers.
- Pruning: If the plants become leggy (long stems with few leaves) in mid-summer, you can give them a light trim to encourage bushier growth and more blooms.
- Deadheading: Not strictly necessary, but removing spent blooms can keep the plant looking tidy.
- Container Gardening: Moss Roses are spectacular in hanging baskets or window boxes. Their trailing stems will cascade over the sides, creating a beautiful ball of color.
- Rock Gardens: They are ideal for crevices in rock walls or between stepping stones.
- Soil Warning: Make sure your soil drains quickly. If you have heavy clay, mix in some sand or gravel to improve drainage.
